Closet Basics

March 11, 2022 · In: Fashion, Lovely Living

A few weeks ago I did a closet clean-out, and it was wonderful. I love taking an honest look at my wardrobe and deciding what is working, what needs to go, and what needs to be replaced.

I love having fun, colorful, interesting pieces in my closet, but what I come back to over and over again are the classics. Good jeans. White shirts for every season. Layers that work well with other pieces. Cute comfortable shoes.

The basics sound boring, but they are the foundation of your closet, without which, all of your other pieces may not be used to their fullest. If you have a great blazer, but you don’t have the right tank or shirt to layer underneath, how will you ever wear it? If you have a great collection of summer skirts, but you don’t have a casual shoe that provides for easy daily wear, how will you actually wear those skirts in your daily life? And if you have a cute new handbag and want it to shine, you neutral basics are the right choice!

After my most recent clean out, I realized I needed to replace and refresh a few items. Here is what I purchased.

WHITE SHIRTS
I have two cuts of white button-down shirts in my closet that I return to over and over. First, a classic cut that fits closer to the body without being tight, but is perfect for tucking it or tying at the waist. Second, an oversized cut that is longer in back, a bit roomier, and exactly what I want to wear for a comfortable yet polished look. I own other variations of white shirts, but these two versions are my favorites, and the two in my closet were beginning to show wear and tear. I purchased on of each.

WHITE SNEAKERS and NEW SOCKS
I live in my white Superga sneakers during the warm months, and after a year or so of regular wear, they look tattered, dingy, and worn. Spring is the perfect time to start with a fresh pair, and a new pair of white sneakers feels like the best way to officially kick off the dress and skirt season! I threw in some new socks too for good measure because while not the sexiest purchase, new socks come in handy. Let the old threadbare ones go, and crack open a new pack!

CAMISOLES
Great camisoles are a treasure, and my closet has been missing this vital piece for too long. Camisoles provide a light layer under blazers or sweaters, or you can wear them alone in the heat of summer. I found the cutest option from JCrew Factory with lots of top-notch details. I love the scalloped neckline, the straps are adjustable allowing for a customized fit, they are lined which makes them feel more substantial in addition to providing a bit of extra coverage (particularly in the white option), and they come in a handful of cute colors at a price point that makes them easy to purchase. I bought the white and black and have already determined they are quickly going to be some of my most-worn pieces this spring and summer.

With these new basics in my closet, the other fun pieces I have from collected have the opportunity to shine and are more likely to be worn, which is exactly why we need basics in the first place! Plus, is there anything better than a fresh white shirt? I could live in mine!

Yesterday in The Lovely I wrote about how I am not Yesterday in The Lovely I wrote about how I am not good at what I call summering.

Summering is when we embrace a season of rest. I am good at daily and weekly recharging, but an entire season of rest? Ummm, not my strong suit.

And so, when faced with something I am not yet good at, I approach it the same way I approach anything else I want to learn. I dive in and do the thing!

If you need me, I will be actively summering. Flubbing it up, figuring it out, and knowing that learning by doing is the way forward.
