I bought my first pair of reading glasses with my Anthropologie birthday discount on my fortieth birthday. If that isn’t the most middle-aged use of a retail discount, I’m not sure what is.
Requiring reading glasses is a rite of passage, part of the maturing process, and thankfully, we have options that keep us from looking older than we are. Glasses are a cute accessory to begin with, but when they also become something I rely on daily, I want to make sure they reflect my sense of personal style.
When I started wearing readers, several of my older friends warned me, “Just wait. You’ll lose them and start buying them in bulk.” Because I wanted to find a pair of glasses that I liked and because I wasn’t interested in losing them along the way, I figured out a system to keep up with my glasses that has worked for me for seven years…not one single lost pair!
Instead of keeping up with one pair of glasses in the same way I do with my phone, taking it with me wherever I am, I plant a pair of glasses in different strategic locations so that my glasses are always waiting for me. The glasses don’t leave their location, and this way, I always have glasses exactly where I need them. I keep a pair in my purse, a pair at my desk at work, a pair at my desk at home, a pair next to my bed, and a pair in my car.
When I use the pair at my desk at work, I leave that pair at work. Same goes for when I work at home. When I get up from my desk, the glasses stay. The pair next to my bed travels a little bit with me from needlepointing in bed to needlepointing on the couch, but they live on my nightstand when I am not wearing them. The pair in my purse serves me when I am out and about, and the pair in my car is a great back-up pair. I know it sounds obvious and simple, but this system really works for me and keeps me from wondering where I left my glasses or worrying about whether or not I have a pair when I need them most. They are always waiting for me.
If you are looking for a new pair of reading glasses (or your first pair!), here are a few cute options. This one is my go-to.
