Some time last week, I declared to myself and my closet my official uncoupling from Summer. I cannot do summer any more. I don’t care what the thermometer says, my mental health needs an autumn state of mind, and so, I am taking matters into my own hands and taking a laughably delusional stance regarding the seasons.
Put simply, I am choosing to create my own fall, and the first place I am starting is my closet. Give me blazers, cardigans, loafers, and a latte.
All joking aside, when you live in Texas, dressing for fall is tricky. In truth, it won’t be literal sweater weather until December, and so we have to be intentional with our wardrobe choices if we want to enjoy the season. The best approach is to choose thing that look like fall but wear like summer.
During this transitional time, I lean on year-round basics like jeans, black pants, white shirts, and my favorite oxfords. But I switch out all of the accessories for items that feel like fall. A hunter green handbag instead of a canvas tote. Gold jewelry instead of raffia. Loafers instead of sandals (this pair has my heart and is at the top of my wish list).
I know that it is too warm for coats, but I will counter and tell you that for the sake of my mental well-being, I will absolutely throw a blazer or cardigan over my shoulders just for appearances. Practicality will win, and I will drape the layer over my chair at work or leave it in the car while running errands, but a cute layer full of fall colors and textures does a mind and heart good.
If you’re looking for a few places to start weaving fall into your everyday looks, here are a few pieces that caught my eye…
