Thank you for all your positive remarks about my new Get Dressed First posts! Your support and feedback always means a lot to me.
This past week, I got to get dressed up for a Saturday night birthday party, but the rest of the week was very hum-drum. Home, work, home, sleep, repeat. Timm was out of town for several days, and it was just me and the girls with not much on our calendars.
It’s weeks like this one when I feel getting dressed becomes very important for me personally. It’s during the blah weeks, where it would be easier to just not bother and stay in workout clothes all day every day, that a blasé approach starts to usher in a sense of inner bleakness that quickly escalates into a less-than-ideal mental state.
Don’t get me wrong. I spend a lot of time in leggings and workout tops, but when I let myself do that every day, I don’t feel as alive or awake, and I am certainly not as productive. Knowing the line between taking it easy and not caring as much as I need to for my own well being is a personal metric, and for me, it only takes a couple of days for me to feel the negative effects.
Here is a look at what I wore over the last week…
SATURDAY

This outfit is perhaps as “me” as an outfit can get. I love a skirt, bonus points if it’s sparkly. And I love pairing fancy pieces with very casual pieces, hence the white button-down shirt. This particular shirt if from Madewell’s spring line, and it is wonderfully oversized with deep side slits that make it perfect for tying.

SUNDAY

After a late night out on Saturday, I spent most of Sunday resting in bed. I did venture out to the grocery store for a few items before getting ready for church. This pink summer clutch is one of my new favorite items from Target. Hi, Timm!

MONDAY

I woke up so early on Monday, I kind of couldn’t believe it. I took the extra time and got ahead on my weekly Monday workflow, and I felt comfy in these pants all day long. The shirt in this photo is the same one I wore with the sequin skirt, and although it’s hard to see, the back hangs out without bunching thanks to the generous side slits. I love the roomy, menswear feel of this shirt and am thinking of getting it in another color.

TUESDAY

I was so sore in this picture, it makes me laugh. I started strength training on Monday, and by Tuesday morning I could barely move. It was rainy all day, and the weather combined with my muscle pain led me straight to my favorite combo: jeans and some version of a white shirt. Comfort dressing at its best.

WEDNESDAY

I took it easy on Wednesday, still sore from Monday’s workout (beginner’s woes, I suppose), and I popped on this dress from last year. T-shirt dresses can be tricky, but this one is long, thick, and I love the scoop neckline. Sadly, I cannot find a similar one online right now for you, but this one from Boden is cute despite being shorter. Wearing this dress reminds me that one quality piece that fits you well is worth ten sub-par pieces that aren’t quite right.

THURSDAY

The humidity in Fort Worth has been oppressive, and the idea of putting anything constricting on my body felt unimaginably miserable. So I went with the lightest summer dress I own, which also happens to be stylish and easy. This outfit took me from work to home to a choir camp concert for Norah at Bass Hall, although I did swap the wedges for sneakers when we headed downtown.

FRIDAY

Hooray for Friday! Timm was back in town, choir camp was over, my muscles weren’t screaming at me, and best news ever, the humidity (sort of) cleared. Lately I am loving cropped tops, and I could not be more surprised. I like how they sit at my natural waist and require no tucking. I am finding them incredibly comfortable and cute, especially this feather-light t-shirt from Target (a steal at $10!). Paired with jeans, a scarf (here’s my post on how to style a scarf), and cute summer kicks, my outfit felt perfect for a creative Friday at work.
