Get Dressed First 07.01.23

July 1, 2023 · In: Fashion, Lovely Living

This week Timm, Norah, and Lillian and I embarked on a family road trip to Muskegon, Michigan. Jake is working at a fine arts camp not far from where we were staying and we took advantage of a week where none of us had much going on to travel north and visit him while getting away from the heat of Texas.

Traveling to Michigan is a two-day drive, and this much car time was a challenge. The silver lining was our kids were old enough to handle ten hours in a the car each day, and once we arrived in Michigan, the weather and scenery were well worth the drive.

We rented a super cute house that looked like a big red barn, and I was fairly pleased with what I packed. The house we stayed in did not have a full-length mirror, but Norah came through and took some great photos for me!

Here is what I wore this week….

SATURDAY

On Saturday we got up super early and were on the road by 6:00 a.m. I chose to wear this super gauzy white dress, a open weave cardigan (I get cold in the car), and comfy sneakers. This dress basically feels like wearing a nightgown, and comfort was definitely key for the first day of our long road trip.

SUNDAY

We stayed in a hotel in St. Louis on Saturday night and woke up early again to get on the road. I opted for comfy black leggings, a capped sleeve cotton t-shirt, and my favorite navy blue sweat shirt for an added layer. Same sneakers and a cute headband rounded out the car-friendly look. We arrived in Michigan around dinner time, and headed straight to the beach to check out the view and enjoy the cold, windy air. I was thankful for the layers.

MONDAY

On Monday we relaxed and went to see a live performance at Jake’s camp. The weather was lovely and I wore a casual pair of navy linen pants along with a great boatneck top and one of my favorite summer sweaters.

BEACH

We spent time at the beach almost every afternoon, and my go-to combo was my Summersalt swimsuit, this awesome pair of smoked waist, waterproof J.Crew board shorts, a long-sleeved shirt (so windy and cold) plus a head scarf to keep my hair from flying everywhere. My Freedom Moses slides served me well in the sandy terrain.

TUESDAY

Tuesday we headed out to explore Muskegon. We visited the Farmer’s Market and spent more time at the beach. I don’t normally love mini skirts, but this denim one from Madewell is really great. It is longer in the back and is cut very generously. It doesn’t have any stretch, which helps it hold its shape, but it definitely loosed up a bit with wear.

WEDNESDAY

Jake had the morning free, so we went to visit him at camp for a grand tour. It was amazing to see where he is working, and I was so impressed with Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.

I don’t have a photo, but I spent a lot of time lounging around the house in the evenings wearing these linen shorts and a casual tee or a chambray shirt. I don’t wear shorts very often, but these were spot on and cut to accommodate my hips in a way that I really appreciated. I got them in white and the cute madras plaid.

THURSDAY

On our last full day in Michigan, we spent the first half of the day lounging around in our pajamas and eating pancakes and drinking coffee. Then we ventured out to a local coffee shop that Norah picked out. I went to the grocery store to shop for dinner supplies while Timm and the girls toured a submarine.

FRIDAY

I feel like my face says it all in this photo: Do I really have to drive two days to get home? We got up super early to get back on the road, and I decided to travel in jeans and a white tank with my comfy sweatshirt and shoes. I was so tired and ready to be home. All in all, I was really pleased with the trip and felt like I packed well for a relaxing, casual trip with no agenda and no events or fancy dinners.

Loved seeing your outfits, and it looked like a lovely place where you stayed!
Having just traveled by car recently all the way from FW to Gulf Shores, Alabama, and back home 3 days later, our group of 5 learned it would have been better to stay at least one more day…at least I wasn’t the driver!!!
