Table Talk, 06.02.18

June 2, 2018 · In: Chronicles, Journals

The Hurley House staff culture is a source of life for me.  We spend a lot of time together, and along the way we talk about one million different topics.  I have decided to share some of what we discuss in a weekly post called Table Talk.  These posts aren’t curated or scouted.  They are literally what we talk about or find interesting or wonder about or laugh at.

So pull up a chair, grab a La Croix and some pimiento cheese, and let’s dive in!

ONE.
First up this week, who didn’t love the royal wedding?  We certainly did.  The dress.  The cake.  The hats.  Loved it.  In fact, we think you should grab your best friend and celebrate Harry and Meghan with these summer suits.  You’re welcome.

TWO.
We use Instacart a lot to get groceries delivered to the store.  And we noticed the delivery professionals have the best carts.  We all decided we need to find a collapsable cart for taking with us to outdoor concerts or soccer games or even unloading from time to time at work or school.  This one is the front runner.  Do you have any experience or suggestions?  Please share!

THREE.
For the love of sweet baby Jesus, can we all stop it with the deluge of events that get crammed into the month of May?  I know we all feel the pain every year, but dear God what has to happen for this to change?  We do not (DO NOT!) need a commemorative occasion or party for every blasted club, team, grade, event, or class that our children have participated in.  Our children are tired.  They want to be done.  Let’s just let them be done and move along.  When is enough enough? #reclaimingmay

FOUR.
And speaking of children.  We have spent a lot of time over the past couple of weeks discussing an interesting parenting topic.  Why Do Parents Get Their Feelings Hurt When Their Child Isn’t Invited To Something.  As adults, can we all recognize a few things?  Sometimes not everyone is invited to a party, for a number of different (and reasonable) reasons.  Sometimes this is just the way it goes.  In fact, sometimes, this is exactly how the real world works.  Not everyone gets invited to everything.  When your child is not invited, as a parent, you can talk to your child about how they are feeling and speak into their heart.  But as an adult, what would it look like for you to understand that this has nothing to do with you?  Kids pick their friends, and you aren’t a kid.  Let’s all grow up, be adults, and teach our children valuable lessons about identity and acceptance while modeling appropriate adult behavior.

FIVE.
When’s the last time you ate an Uncrustable?  Yes, the frozen PB&J on white bread that you thaw on the counter and then throw into a lunch box.  We are here to tell you, those puppies are good and worth rediscovering.  Dare you to try one and not enjoy the soft white bread, the creamy peanut butter, and the sweet grape jelly.  The craziest part?  They have TEN GRAMS OF PROTEIN.  Not even kidding around.  Ten grams.  That’s almost as much as two eggs.

SIX.
Afternoon iced coffee is a vital part of my daily routine.  After reading this article, I am definitely going to be trying a few new variations.  Sparkling dessert iced coffee may become a thing.  Stay tuned.

SEVEN.
If you have never had local honey, make it part of your summer quest to find a farmer’s market and purchase some.  Elizabeth’s family has a small farm, and they raise bees.  As a result, they get to harvest honey, and she always shares a bottle with me.  Not only is it the honey-est honey I’ve ever tasted, but each batch tastes completely different based on the flowers the bees pollinated. This most recent batch has huge orange notes and a distinct floral aroma.  Each jar is a gift, and I am now a huge fan of local honey.

EIGHT.
Last, but not least, this is a PSA regarding canned wine.  Beware!  One 12-ounce can of wine is equal to 2.5 5-oz glasses of wine.  Let me repeat that.  One can (12 oz) equals two-and-a-half glasses.  Which means, that if you were to drink two cans of wine, you would be drinking an ENTIRE BOTTLE OF WINE.  No backstory needed.  Just know, from me to you, that two cans of wine does not, in fact, equal two glasses.  It equals the whole bottle, and that is likely to bring with it severe physical consequences.  Please enjoy canned wine responsibly.

Have a lovely day!

Perrier-Jouet champagne in the small bottle because it's my favorite champagne and reminds me to celebrate often..

Hosting dinner for my work team is a high value for me. Sure, we spend huge chunks of time together during the day, but there is something special about gathering for a meal away from work and purely enjoying each other’s company.

Last night we enjoyed a cozy meal, sat at a table lit by candlelight, laughed until our sides ached, and left with full hearts. What an honor to to work alongside such magnificent friends.

I hosted two new in-person events full of delightful details and thoughtful touch points, hired two long-time friends who are now working with me as a part of my creative team, and celebrated two birthdays. Wowser!

On this Monday morning, I am filled with joy and gratitude for the work I get to do, for the people I am privileged to work with, and for you, the reason I get to continue writing and sharing.

Thank you for reading, attending, supporting, and connecting with me. You give my work meaning, and I hope we get to know each other even more in the coming year. 💗
