Table Talk, 06.23.18

June 23, 2018 · In: Chronicles, Journals

I spent the majority of this past week all by myself, which for this introvert is what I call a dream week.  The kids were with grandparents (detailed post coming later this week), and Timm was on a business trip.  It was just me, Henry (the dog I don’t like), and Dumbledore (the Beta fish that lives in Norah’s room) at the house for most of the week.

Even with a normal work week, I was able to find a few pockets of time to spend doing absolutely nothing, which happens almost never in my world, and which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Here’s what we talked about this week…

ONE.
Do yourself a favor and start infusing some vodka with fresh pineapple today.  Here in a couple of weeks, we are going to do a post that is going to make you wish you had a carafe of cold pineapple vodka waiting for you, and the time to start is now!  In a large pitcher or jar, combine a bottle of vodka, and two very ripe pineapples (peeled and cubed, obviously).  Set it at room temperature, shake it around every day, and wait two weeks.  You’ll thank me later.

TWO.
As I mentioned above, my children and husband were gone this week.  It is interesting the way the prospect of being kid-free has evolved over time for me.  In the beginning, it was all about recovering (“How much sleep can I catch up on?”).  Then it became novel to do things like go to Target during nap time (“So this is what it’s like to be out at 2:30 pm on a Tuesday!”).  Then it turned into a turbo-charged project mindset (organize the family photos, clean out the closets, repaint the dining table).  There was a brief period of time where I wanted to be relatively rebellious (Don’t make the bed!  Stay out super late!  Chocolate chips for breakfast!).  But now it has settled into a mental exhale where I let my mind go blank and acknowledge the fact that no one needs anything from me.  It feels like I’m growing over here.

THREE.
If you follow me on Instagram, you know from my story that we changed up our normal Chicken Friday this week.  Instead of roasting a chicken, Kailey taught us how to make chicken spring rolls (which were amazing), and I shared with everyone one of my favorite dessert slash snack combinations.  Saltine.  Nutella.  And a slice of fresh strawberry.  I used to make this as an after-school snack for my kids, and I challenge you to try this and tell me it isn’t life-changing.  (Side note:  We all agreed this is exactly the kind of “cooking” Antoni would do.)

FOUR.
Finally, I made a fairly huge discovery this week that requires an apology on my part.  I receive DMs on Instagram.  I see the little number in a circle, and I click on it to read them.  However, I had NO IDEA that there was a feature on Instagram where people could send you a message, but the message is hidden unless you click in a different place.  It seems people have been sending me messages for almost a year, and I just now found them this week.  So, if you sent me a message asking about ordering a cake, or wanting to book a party, or wondering about a recipe…I am so so so sorry for not replying.  I promise going forward that this will not happen again.

Have a lovely weekend!

The wooden frame is made from stretcher bars, and there is a cool little tool I use to install the tacks. The whole set up isn’t complicated, but if you’re a visual learner like me, I made a little video tutorial for you over on the blog!

Yesterday in The Lovely I wrote about how I am not Yesterday in The Lovely I wrote about how I am not good at what I call summering.

Summering is when we embrace a season of rest. I am good at daily and weekly recharging, but an entire season of rest? Ummm, not my strong suit.

And so, when faced with something I am not yet good at, I approach it the same way I approach anything else I want to learn. I dive in and do the thing!

If you need me, I will be actively summering. Flubbing it up, figuring it out, and knowing that learning by doing is the way forward.
